“We couldn’t be more pleased working with Corbett Design Build on the renovation of our home. In the late summer of 2016, our family was dealing with the recent and very tragic injury to our son Ryley, who is now a C6 quadriplegic. We knew accessibility renovations to our home were needed, but had no idea where to start. We obtained designs and quotes from several contractors. Plans for the designs and quotes varied greatly, as did the contractors’ general approach and presentation of their ideas. Already dealing with a very stressful event in our lives, comprehending the sheer magnitude of some of the proposals was completely overwhelming.

“Barry took a much more subtle and calming approach. I remember standing in my driveway with Barry, my eyes welling up with tears, as we discussed Ryley’s accident. His compassion for our situation was evident. He was less worried about selling me his services; instead, he wanted to truly help us. ‘Let’s just take it one step at a time, Tim,’ he said, ‘let’s get the ramp built into the house so your boy can come home.’ I knew at that moment Barry was going to renovate our home.

“We required various modifications to our home, including immediate wheelchair access to the first floor of the home (which Barry did immediately, even before we came to an agreement), planned access to the second floor, a completely accessible bathroom design, and various other accessibility updates, including floor widening, smooth-surface floors, etc. The overall services and responsiveness of the expanded CDB team were wonderful. As much of the work was completed while we were living in the house, it was important to have the least amount of disruption as possible. I will also say that the team working within our home was very respectful and professional.

“It was important the modifications completed didn’t scream ‘handicap house,’ and the completed renovation exceeded our expectations in this regard. There were some minor finishing touches that needed some return visits to complete, and I would have chosen a different flooring install company, but these are minor in the overall scope of the job.

“A special touch Barry provided free of charge was the heated bathroom floor. In getting to know our family and the issues spinal cord injury patients like Ryley have with body temperature management, Barry wanted to be sure Ryley would be comfortable while bathing. It has been a wonderful addition to the bathroom and really makes a difference!

“Corbett was chosen for two reasons. One was our experience with their work on a previous project; and two, their proven capability to handle larger projects, including the removal of a load-bearing wall and replacing it with an I-beam. They did an excellent job in workmanship and are always asking if we have any questions about anything.
